Explain Balanced Mutual Funds

The name its self describe that the mutual fund diversify portfolio in balance approach. Balance Mutual fund invests in both equity and debt instrument. In this case, some percent of your portfolio is placed in high return and some percent in capital appreciation. With this, you balance risk rewards and optimize your return.

Usually, investment is done approx 50-70% portfolio in equity and rest in debt funds. Balance fund is part of the Hybrid funds category.

  • Moderate High Risk As fund are diversified b/w equity and debt funds, so its consider under Moderate High Risk category.
  • Return Balanced Fund are expose to equity so capital upside is possible in long term and debt funds are for Fixed Income/ regular income. Average return in between 20 to 25% in 2 to 3 years time horizon.
  • Long Team Investment Horizon - Balanced Funds are hybrid funds in nature and for long term investment, so you should plan for your long term goal.
  • Tax Balanced funds are treated as Equity Funds. So the short term capital gain (STCG), if invested for up to one year window is 15%, for long term till Rs 1 lakh is tax free, after that 10% long-term capital gains (LTCG) is applicable.

Disadvantage of Balanced Mutual Funds

  • Equity funds are considered high risk and high return, but due to high risk factor, your combined return can get affected.
  • Minimum lock in period.
  • The fund manager is not allowed to take advantage of arbitrage opportunities.
