Incorporated in 1964, UTI Mutual Fund is India's first Mutual Fund AMC started with vision to mobilize retail savings and invest the same in the capital markets for small investors. In 1964 UTI came with its first scheme- Unit Scheme 1964 (US-64) which was considered as essential investment for the Indian Middle Class. By the end of 1987, UIT AUM grew by Rs 6700 Cr.
In 2003, UTI become SEBI registered Mutual Fund house. The Unit Trust of India (Transfer of undertaking & Repeal) Act 2002 was passed by the Parliament, paving way for the bifurcation of UTI into Specified Undertaking of Unit Trust of India (SUUTI) and UTI Mutual Fund (UTIMF).
UTI Asset Management Company Limited has four wholly owned subsidiaries viz UTI Venture Funds Management Company Limited, UTI International Limited, UTI Retirement Solutions Limited and UTI Capital Private Limited.
UTI Mutual Fund is promoted by State Bank of India (SBI), Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), Bank of Baroda (BoB) and Punjab National Bank (PnB) with each of them presently holding a 18.24% stake in the paid up capital of UTI AMC. 26% stake in UTI AMC is hold by T Rowe Price International Ltd. (TRP). On Jan 2010, T.Rowe Price Group Inc. through its wholly owned subsidiary T.Rowe Price Global Investment Services Ltd. U.K.(TRP) acquired 26% stake in UTIAMC.
