You can buy sovereign gold bonds in two ways – Online and Offline.
All major banks like HDFC, ICICI, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of Maharashtra, SBI, Kotak are allowing its clients to buy sovereign gold bonds from their branch office. You need to visit a branch and submit an application form. Cash payment up to Rs 20,000 is allowed. Above Rs 20000 you need to pay by cheque, online transfer, draft. You will get your sovereign gold bond certificate in physical format or via email if you have an email id. Linking bank account information is mandatory to get the interest income.
You can purchase SGB via the post office also. Similar rules as banks will apply.
There are some registered agents who are helping you to invest in SGB. Similar rules will apply as banks.

You can provide your demat information so your bond will be available in a demat format.
Most of the stockbrokers like Zerodha, Upstox, 5paisa, ICICISecurities, HDFC Securitiesetc, allow investing in sovereign gold bonds online. Just log in to their trading platform, click on invest, search for SGB, and apply.
Again, when you apply with your broker, your SGB holdings are in demat format and you are eligible to trade your SGB any time.
In case your broker doesn't have an online process, you can drop an email to support or call the customer care number and request for SGB investment. They may have an offline process.
Buying a sovereign gold bond online is the best and preferred way. You don’t need a demat account to invest in a sovereign gold bond, but if you have a Demat account then adding the same in the application is preferred, so you get bonds in your demat account and manage your portfolio easily. When you buy SGB online, you will get a special discount of Rs 50 per gm.
